Overview

For DP3, we created Shelvation, an automated moving shelf for arthritis patients and more generally, individuals with limited mobility.

Target Audience

<aside> 🩺 Arthritis affects 24% of adults and reduces joints strength, making simple tasks painful. Common symptoms include joint pain, swelling, physical weakness and reduced mobility. Patients with arthritis reported the following activities as challenging: grasping small objects, reaching above one’s head, and pulling objects. After brainstorming numerous ideas to aid mobility issues, we settled for an automated shelf that eliminates the need for reaching for objects on a high surface.

Objectives & Constraints

Objectives Constraints Function
Makes items at higher elevation easier to obtain Safe to use Moves items in 2 dimensions: forwards, backwards, up, and down
Moves quickly & quietly Does not damage items during movement

Final Deliverables

Our Solution: Shelvation

<aside> 🛠 Shelvation is a device that utilizes a car jack mechanism to maneuver a shelf or any hard-to-reach surface down and forward, or backwards and upwards. This enables individuals with mobility issues, specifically arthritis patients, to easily access everyday objects on an elevated platform, all while limiting muscle strain.
